Breaking the Wall -“She” by JQT Design

As a customized furniture company, JiQingTang has drawn inspiration from classical Chinese furniture and adopted the mortise and tendon joint structure to hand make fine collectable furniture in light of contemporary aesthetics. JQT Design originally designed the “She” Series. The series is   composed of five chairs—High Wall, Swan I, Swan II, Barstool and Little Prince, which illustrate the 5 aspects of modern Chinese women’s life.

High Wall

An armchair with hexagonal seat, with reference to the chair in the painting “Thinking in the Curio Room” from “12 Lady Portraits” attributed to Yong Zheng period.

Women’s destiny was pre-determined. Their role was limited with unequal social status.  Women were powerless. Their life was like living under a wall.

Swan I

Women’s life and destiny start to change as soon as they break the wall, get out of it and take off.  The pursuit of knowledge with an open mind is the crucial energy for the change. The chair is designed as a reading chair.

Pu Dong, an imperial clansman of the late Qing Dynasty, made an inscription on the table

Swan II

This work is inspired from swan’s purity and elegance, and its rhythm of body movement while dancing. The chair is designed as a reading chair.

Bartstool

Stay proactive, open-minded and true to yourself.  Be confident and proud of being sexy.

The Chair is designed as a bar chair.

The Little Prince

Mother’s role remains unchanged since animal life begins. The two-seater for mother and child pays a tribute to maternal love. Its greatness is the cradle for trust, intimacy and creativity.

The design is evolved from Chinese couch bed. The inspiration of the carved back comes from the French novella “the Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. It displays a snake swallowing an elephant.

This chair is designed as a 2-seater for mother and child.

The “She” Series is a narration of the changes of Chinese women’s socio-economical status over the last 300 years. Knowledge reshapes destiny. “She” is the best interpretation of wisdom and independence!
